What’s this all about?

In March after the Primary for Mayor, as Mayor Francis Slay was leaving office, he announced the City would apply to Federal Aviation Administration’s Privatization Pilot Program. Note that St. Louis Post-Dispatch linked story was co-authored by Koran Addo. He is now Communications Director for Mayor Krewson.

Gerard Slay, Mayor’s Slay’s brother, retired as Senior Deputy Director at Lambert Airport last year. He died this year.

Airport privatization was never discussed during this year’s Mayoral Primary. At the time, Alderwoman Lyda Krewson served on the Airport Commission and chaired the Board of Aldermen’s Transportation and Commerce Committee. No public hearing by her committee or any other BOA committee. Mayor Slay acted unilaterally.

The FAA accepted the application in April after Mayor Lyda Krewson was elected and sworn into office.

Still, no public hearing, no public input. Instead, the privatization process is in the hands of Fly314, a private effort paid for Grow Missouri Inc. That is a nonprofit (not a political action committee required to report to Missouri Ethics Commission) funded by billionaire Rex Sinquefield.

FLY314 is run by Travis Brown, of Pelopidas, the public relations, governmental relations, campaign consultant which handles Rex Sinquefield’s campaigns.

And, Ed Rhode, former Communications Director for Mayor Slay, is also a spokesman for Brown and advisor to St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger.

In June, Mary Ellen Ponder, former Chief of Staff for Mayor Slay, went to work for a Pelopidas subsidiary and now serves as Sinquefield’s Chief of Staff.

Also in June, Jeff Rainford, another former Chief of Staff for Mayor Slay, registered as a lobbyist for STL Aviation Group, a company owned by Oaktree Capital Management, which is very interested in privatization of Lambert Airport.

Nick Pistor, former City Hall reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, has been hired by Macquarie Group, of Australia, to lobby for airport privatization.
